You can begin to prepare for your Chinese wedding invitations as soon as you've decided on a date for the big day and reserved your restaurants.
Sometimes, Chinese hotels will provide you with blank invites for a particular percentage of the guests expected to take part in the wedding banquet. However, getting the wedding invitation itself printed is usually up to the couple.
If you aren't satisfied with the quality of the wedding invites in the wedding banquet packages or haven't been offered anything like that, you will need to look into sourcing the cards out yourself.
Two Months Prior to the Wedding…
Since it is customary that Chinese wedding invites be sent out at least 2-4 weeks before the wedding day, you should start selecting cards 8-10 weeks before the big day, if not earlier. This will allow sufficient time to get them printed and retract any errors if required. Your checklist of things to do should include:
Selection of the cards
Finding a good printing service
Preparing the invitation text
Proof-reading the prototype before the final printing
Colors for the Wedding Invitations
Traditionally, Chinese Wedding Invitations are red. However, Western influence has led to everything from magenta, purple, maroon, cream, and even pink being used on Chinese wedding invitations all the time. Avoid mourning colors like green, blue and black though. Silver and gold fonts are popular choices. However, choose the font color based on the kind of card you've chosen.
One-Fold, Center-Fold, or Two-Fold?
With regular single-fold invites, the English wording on the invitation will be printed from the left, while the Chinese wordings are on the right. For twice folded over cards, it's easier to distribute the vertical text over the 2 smaller panels. Wording on Chinese wedding invitations are vertically laid out and read from the right to the left.
Details to include on your Chinese wedding invitation, make sure you include the following details
• Bride and groom's names
• Bride and groom's orders of birth
• Parents' names
• Calendar dates (Gregorian and Chinese)
• Dinner venue address
• RSVP information
• Time of cocktail reception and dinner
• If you have a seating plan - the table number
Also, make sure to include the dinner venue's map and any other necessary information for reaching the site. Indicate dress code preferences, if any.
It is also useful to add in an RSVP response form with special meal preferences and number of attendees. When you collect the printed up wedding invites from your supplier, make sure you check the following:
? Envelope size
? Insert size
? Invitation text for errors
? Number of cards, envelopes, and inserts
Distributing Your Chinese Wedding Invites
Once the engagement is completed, the groom and bride's parents will distribute Wedding Invitation amongst guests, close relatives, and friends attending the wedding. For convenience purposes, it is acceptable to distribute the invitations through mail 4-6 weeks prior to the wedding day. If you follow the above outlined etiquette, your guests will indeed be very pleased to receive your beautiful wedding invitations.
